■As you know, recently I’m thinking how we can bridge the difference of working culture between Japanese and Westerners. And I found one missing point. European and American office workers consider themselves as “brain worker”. So they behave as intellectualist, putting too much stress upon intellectual aspects of human beings while neglecting physical aspects. But if you watch baseball games and Olympic events, the most important difference between Japanese and Westerners exists in physical aspects. The examples like Ichiro and Matsui in major-league baseball are still exceptional. The physical capacity average of Japanese is much less than that of Westerners. If Japanese can’t concentrate intensive and difficult discussion with Westerners for three hours, it is not because Japanese have less intelligence but because we have less physical strength. Westerners neglect the difference of physical capacity by saying, “We are brain workers” while Japanese are exhausted. As long as we neglect physical aspects in office work, Japanese and Westerners will not be able to even start meaningful discussion about how to bridge the cultural difference which is one of intellectual aspects in the working place.
